Putting MENA on the map

Art Basel Qatar showcases artworks from across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and celebrates the global resonance of its most compelling creative talents. The fair offers a rare chance to see the varied practices of a wide cross-section of established and emerging artists side by side. Its single-artist format elevates this experience, allowing unexpected dialogues to emerge from across the region’s diverse creative scene

Works by distinguished older generations of artists, such as Mona Hatoum, Etel Adnan, Shirin Neshat, Ahmed Mater, Hassan Sharif and Simone Fattal, are being shown alongside those of the rising stars who are reshaping contemporary art within the region and in its diasporas – including Bouthayna Al Muftah, Meriem Bennani, Ali Cherri, Maha Malluh and Nadia Ayari. Their practices span film, performance, sculpture, installation and conceptual research, and present an impressive landscape of cultural expression inspired by lived histories, political realities and rapidly evolving urban centres. The result is a fair that reframes the geography of contemporary art and offers a portrait of a region increasingly central to the global imagination.
